That’s very nice of you to say Nick. Thank you for the compliment. Our industry is really behind when it comes to online marketing and technology in general. I want to change that.

i’m not a big fan of pay per bid sites. Though some of our clients have success with them, most get price shoppers and non-ideal clients.

“I know there is another way besides paying to get a job…”

Nick, you will always have to spend money to get new clients and grow… Even when relying on offline methods there is an investment of time and/or money when you speak to leads or create, print and distribute the flyers. Your time spent marketing, is time not spent doing other things.

when youre small nothing beats going door to door and introducing yourself to the neighbors, giving them a refrigerator magnet and telling them about your services. It takes some balls but it works.

as you get more and more clients from your grassroots methods you need to start reinvesting in your marketing. your marketing budget should get larger as your business gets larger. This is how every business from Valleycrest to Apple have grown.

The saying you have to spend money to make money isn’t a cliche. It is true.

Hi I had a few questions for you if you have time I’m new to the site and was interested in learning as much as I can about this industry. I will be looking to start up a lawn care business and was wondering what kind of licensing and insurance would i need in the state of Indiana/ Michigan and if you knew of any seminars in south bend in the next few months that you would recommend. I’m also new to the business world (well kind of) and was looking for any tips that might help keep my business going from start and even after. I, Thank you for your time and appreciate any assistance you could be in any or all of these areas have a great week and thanks again.

Sincerely,
Cody

If your using chemicals you will need a license. I would also recommend insurance to protect yourself and your customers. Laws very from state to state. A quick google search turned up https://www.michigan.gov/mdard

I would also recommend joining PLANET: https://www.landcarenetwork.org/

As far as events, the closest thing to you is GIE+EXPO & Green Industry conference in Louisville. It is the biggest industry event. I will be giving a keynote there as well.

You will also find some help here:

Hi , I’d like to start my own business in lawn care/landscaping, i have a truck and a couple mowers and wipper snippers and a few good friends willing to work, my main gole is to do good and make money, any advice would help, thanks

Andrew D.

Start grassroots. Start with your friends and family that live in the areas you want to service.

Print and distribute your own flyers/doorhangers. The higher the quality of design and message, the more seriously you will be taken.

When you’re small nothing beats going door to door and introducing yourself to the neighbors, giving them a refrigerator magnet and telling them about your services. It takes some balls but it works.

as you get more and more clients from your grassroots methods you need to start reinvesting in your marketing and expand it into different areas (such as online). Your marketing budget should also get larger as your business gets larger. This is how every business from Valleycrest to Apple have grown. they reinvest more and more in their sales and marketing.

The saying you have to spend money to make money isn’t a cliche. It is true.

How do I get our new lawn care website found on google, and first of course?
Thanks for having a great resource for people like me!

Hi Preston, Search engine optimization its not something that you are going to try to do yourself. You’ll need allocate a marketing budget and choose an expert in that strategy. It’s more than just changing a few tags on a web page.

Thank you for the honest answer. Is that something that you do? If so, how much would I need to allocate to get a good start on it?

No problem Preston. SEO is just one of several strategies we implement in our marketing programs.

Its just one strategy.

We usually combine several strategies for the greatest results. Our clients budgets vary and the programs are custom to the clients needs. Generate leads, increase CLV, generate referrals, etc…

Hi Chris, we don’t offer website “templates”. The websites we do are built custom for each client based on their needs and our expertise. If your looking for a “free or low cost option” and you’re not concerned if they convert visitors to customers, you might want to take a look at Service Autopilot, as they do have an option for a website add-on.
